During subsequent field visits, my informants ranged even more widely, and included Italian feminists, scholars and intellectuals, shop owners, migrant activists, and trade union representatives, along with migrant women. Some of my closest informant relationships during the latter years were with migrant women of various educational backgrounds from Somalia, Cameroon, Senegal, Ethiopia, Kenya, Brazil, Nigeria, and Italy. My research was also facilitated by a number of circumstances that made it easier for me to earn the trust of migrants, including their knowledge of my husband, an African American anthropologist who did extensive research on Senegalese in Turin.

We thought we might find a way for her to acquire the formal training she needed to work legally in an Italian salon. Italians learn this trade as teenagers, apprenticed in salons and mentored by shop owners until they receive a certificate, which finally allows them to earn full salaries as stylists. We thought we might be able to fi nd a Turin salon with an owner interested in supporting immigrants, someone willing to permit Georgette to work as an apprentice and learn the skills required to style Italian hair.

Entering Italy and searching for work with increasing frequency, migrant women were positioned on the precarious margins of “female work” in Italy, associated with household and sexual services.
