However, major epidemiological studies also strongly suggest that a p o p u l a t i o n ' s lifestyle is a definite influence on the development of premature clinical atherosclerosis (Stamler, 1966, 1970). It has long been observed that there exists a wide variation in the degree of the disease between individuals. A large systematic study of the car­ diovascular system at autopsy has established unequivocally a remarkable difference in degree of atherosclerosis between different population groups, even when matched as to age and sex (McGill, 1968).

It seems possible that this lipid oxidation may take place in en­ dothelial cells or macrophages, since most of the lipid pigments were noted within these cells. Intimal lesions may be related to progressive oxidation and accumulation of these pigments (Gonzales, 1963). Wolinsky et al. (1975) introduced lead nitrate t o visualize lysosomal enzymes. Gonzales (1963) and co-workers indicated that acid phosphatases and nonspecific esterase activity are associated with intimal proliferation in early h u m a n lesions.

The fixed hearts are cut into 5-mm-thick " b r e a d loaf t y p e " slices in a plane parallel to the heart base. This procedure preserves all structures of the heart in proportions similar to those in vivo and it permits a variety of measurements in addition to the evaluation of infarct size. It provides a suitable way t o detect irreversibly damaged muscle fibers at the gross a n d microscopic levels a n d it preserves the dimensions of heart structures and allows permanent tissue processing.
